Word choice is used to give an impression of goodness and abundance. The forest is described positively at this point it is almost like the biblical Garden of Eden “it was a good tree”, “many cones”, “much sunshine” P.1. The forest is beautiful but the background of the war affects everything. Setting : On page one of the novel we immediately perceive the conflict going on between the setting in time and place. – Conflict between characters – Duror (evil) vs. poor, social upheaval sparked by the war. You need to know the themes introduced in this chapter and how they are all resolved by the end of the novel. You need to be familiar with chapter one for a possible question on a novel with an effective opening chapter.
